Northwest Assistance Ministries Delivered School Supplies to More Than 1,500 Students in the Houston Area

The summer is almost over, but excitement over school supplies is just around the corner!

Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) distributed its annual Back to School supplies to more than 1,500 children from kindergarten through 12th grade on August 13, 2016. The Back to School program helps local children in need from the Spring, Klein parts of Aldine and Cy-Fair Independent School Districts with the school supplies needed to start the school year.

“We are excited to see new and familiar faces that will benefit from our Back to School program,” explained Debbie Peterson, Director of Emergency Basic Needs at NAM. “We know how important it is for children to have school supplies and for families to have one less financial burden to worry about,” Peterson said.

One of those familiar faces is Cynthia Ross, who came back for a second time after receiving Back to School supplies last year for her family. “Shopping for school supplies for my family is so much easier thanks to NAM,” said Ross. “I have three kids and I’m excited they’ll get to experience education on a different level. NAM has been of tremendous help for me and my family.”

According to Peterson, support from our local community has been instrumental to the success of this program. “We couldn’t do what we do without all the help we receive from our corporate and community partners, congregations, supporters and NAM staff,” Peterson said. “Thanks to their continued support, NAM is able to help many children and families in need and we’re excited about being able to make a difference in their lives.”

In addition to receiving school supplies, 200 children received a $20 Payless gift card for shoes and 300 other received a $30 Academy gift card to purchase uniforms. This year’s Back to School donation goal was $31,000 and currently NAM has raised $16,995. NAM will be accepting donations until the goal is met.
