NAM Receives "Shining Star Award" from The Way Home Houston

Northwest Assistance Ministries has been honored with the “Shining Star Award” from The Way Home Houston.

The award was presented for outstanding participation in Coordinated Access, which is the new standard for how community members access housing programs, and for accurate, real-time data entered into the county-wide Homeless Management Information System. NAM was one of the first organizations to accept referrals through the Coordinated Access program.

NAM offers a range of services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, including:

  • Short-term assistance with rent, utilities or groceries to help prevent homelessness
  • Rapid rehousing such as NAM’s new Homes for School Children program
  • Transitional housing, providing shelter and support services for 3 to 18 months to give people time to stabilize and develop additional skills
  • Permanent Housing for those who are chronically homeless and disabled

Data collected in January 2014 showed that on a given night, there were more than 5,300 sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals in the Houston/Harris County/Fort Bend region. As part of the Continuum of Care for Houston/Harris County, NAM works in partnership with other providers, government bodies, business partners and the homeless themselves to help move people out of homelessness and toward self-sufficiency.

“I’m honored that NAM has received this recognition, and so proud of our staff and volunteers,” said Carole Little, President & CEO of NAM. “They work hard every day to serve Neighbors in Need, and their efforts are making a real difference in northwest Houston.”
