NAM & KISD Kaiser Elementary Deliver Groceries to Families in Need

NAM and Klein ISD (KISD) Kaiser Elementary delivered 70 boxes of supplemental groceries to families in the Blackpool subdivision, and surrounding families of students from Kaiser Elementary the afternoon of Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

Last week, Christy Spisak, Director, Community Relations & Education Foundation of KISD, reached out to NAM with a situation. “The need for food has increased in the Klein Forest family of schools, and there are many families that do not have transportation to get to food distribution sites,” said Spisak.

NAM immediately jumped into action and worked with Kaiser Elementary to come up with a plan. If these families couldn’t come to NAM, then NAM would come to them.

Flyers were created and distributed throughout the KISD area. These flyers let families know that they could come to NAM for assistance.  Families who did not have transportation were contacted by Kaiser staff ahead of time and given flyers letting them know that NAM and KISD Kaiser Elementary would be delivering groceries directly to their doorstep.

NAM’s Joanne Watford Nutrition Center put together boxes of groceries that included canned good, lentils, and pasta, and loaded them into the NAM truck. NAM staff members met with the KISD liaison and a few volunteers in the parking lot of Kaiser Elementary and caravanned to the neighborhood. Practicing safety protocols and social distancing, NAM was able to deliver 70 boxes of groceries to help families in need.

“Our role is to provide emergency assistance,” said NAM’s President & CEO, Les Cave. “NAM’s mission is neighbors helping neighbors and thanks to our collaboration with KISD we were able to do just that.”

The Joanne Watford Nutrition Center (JWNC) is where clients have available shelf stable foods, fresh produce, meat, dairy and frozen items. Through the Senior Food Program, low-income seniors also receive supplemental groceries each month.

Due to COVID-19 the Joanne Watford Nutrition Center is operating as a drive-thru food pantry.
