Domestic Violence Awareness Month Wreath Ceremony

Did you know October is Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month? In honor of the beginning of Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month, NAM held a wreath ceremony on Monday, October 2nd..

We will display the wreath in the lobby throughout October to remember those we have lost and honor those still experiencing domestic violence.

We placed a ribbon on the purple dress with the 46 names of Harris County victims from 2021. We also have blank ribbons where people can write the name of someone they knew. The ribbons and wreath will be displayed in the lobby all month.

Below are some domestic violence statistics that were shared today at the ceremony:

  • The most recent report conducted by the Texas Council on Family Violence is from the year 2021. In 2021, 62,796 Texans received services at a family violence agency funded by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and over a quarter of a million calls were placed to the Texas HHSC’s crisis line for domestic violence.
  • The number of incidents of family violence in Texas has continued to increase year over year, going from 196,902 in 2019 to 232,840 in 2021 which are the latest numbers reported by the TCFV.
  • Within the same year, 204 Texans were killed by their intimate partners across 63 counties, 46 victims being in Harris County, which is an increase of 24% since 2020.
