What's New with Meals on Wheels?

There has been a lot of hustle and bustle in NAM's Meals on Wheels program for the past couple of months with an in-kind donation from KFC to free COVID vaccines from Harris County.

In April, Meals on Wheels America partnered with KFC to distribute frozen chicken breasts and sandwich buns to NAM's Meals on Wheels clients who were affected by the ice storm earlier this year.  Cases of frozen, boneless chicken breast - each case comes with 168 pieces of chicken - were donated. NAM's Meals on Wheels picked up 40 pounds of chicken breasts for our seniors at the beginning of April and distributed the meat to our seniors. There was enough chicken to distribute among the clients for weeks until the supply was exhausted in the middle of May.  The clients were so appreciative of receiving this unexpected gift of fresh meat, especially since some of them had lost their food during the freeze with the power outages and were still recouping from their loss.

NAM's Meals on Wheels is also working with the Harris County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) who is supplying free COVID-19 vaccines to seniors who are not able to drive or leave their homes. Harris County has identified zip codes with high COVID-19 positivity rates and low vaccination rates and will utilize that data to go door to door to reach as many people as they can to offer up this service.  Any senior in Harris County who is interested in receiving the vaccinations can call the Harris County AAA to schedule a free vaccine appointment at 832-393-4301.

Meals on Wheels is also planning to return to daily meal deliveries in June. Seniors can once again look forward to receiving a hot meal Monday - Friday. NAM is looking for volunteer drivers to make the meal deliveries.
