Denim Day

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). During this month, NAM's Family Violence Center (FVC) will present different events and topics to help spread awareness.

On Wednesday, April 28, wear jeans to show support to survivors of sexual assault.

In 1992, an 18-year-old Italian woman was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor who was taking her to her very first driving lesson. He took her to an isolated road, pulled her out of the car, and raped her. The case was taken to trial and the Italian Supreme Court overturned the case stating “because the jeans were so tight, she had to help him remove them” which they believed was consensual sex.

To stand in solidarity with the survivor, we wear our tight jeans on this day. Consent is an affirmative, enthusiastic YES. Clothes, flirting, being under the influence does not equal consent.

During this month, NAM's Family Violence Center wants to hear from you! Please select the answer that matches closest to how you feel. We appreciate your input. Feedback is anonymous. Click here to take the survey.
