NAM/BJM 2019 Spring Career Fair

HOUSTON— Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) and Between Jobs Ministry (BJM) hosted their 2019 Spring Career Fair on Tuesday, March 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Harrell Family Opportunity Center, which is located behind NAM’s main building.  It was free of charge to the 400 job seekers who attended as well as over 50 recruiters and employers like Southwestern Energy, Houston Methodist Hospital, National Oilwell Varco, and Wells Fargo Bank.

Companies in attendance ranged from the City of Houston to Marriott Hotels and spanned a variety of industries such as oil and gas, education, law enforcement, finance, and medical.  Job seekers were able to meet with Workforce Solutions, NAM THRIVE, and Lone Star College, as well as with representatives from non-profit and veteran organizations in the area.  Participants also had the opportunity to attend a special Job Readiness Workshop led by Bill Proctor of NextStep Career Management.

“The quality and variety of job opportunities at this year’s career fair truly offered something for everyone regardless of their educational level, work history or area of interest,” said Mary Silbert, Director of NAM’s Learning Center.  “This event provides an opportunity for individuals to explore open positions available in Houston and to learn more about how NAM and BJM can help them in their job search or career exploration.”

The Learning Center at NAM provides adult students with the vocational training they need to start a new career. During the fiscal year 2017-2018, the Learning Center provided 71 clients with vocational training scholarships and met with 1,058 adults through the Workforce Connector Program. The Learning Center also provided GED and ESL classes to more than 417 students.

Northwest Assistance Ministries is a non-profit, community-based social service agency that strives to meet basic human needs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors.  NAM provides assistance in areas such as food, shelter, health, education and domestic violence awareness and intervention.  During its last fiscal year, NAM touched the lives of more than 130,000 people through its many programs and services.
