NAM Gears Up for Survival Over Summer 2019

Summer can be a difficult time for Northwest Houston-area residents. 2019 has already brought a significant increase in requests for all of Northwest Assistance Ministries’ (NAM’s) services. This increase has stretched NAM’s resources to the limit. In order to keep up with the demand, NAM’s annual “Survival Over Summer” campaign is underway to ensure that it can continue to deliver the much-needed services to our neighbors in need.

For many in the Houston area, summer is anything but carefree. Seniors on fixed incomes often have to choose between buying food or medications and running air conditioning to ward off the sweltering heat. For families with children, the summer break from school can mean extra childcare expenses—and no free meals.

In an effort to ease the burden of those struggling in the local community, each spring NAM hosts “Survival Over Summer” (SOS).

“There are hundreds, if not thousands of people in our community who struggle just to meet their families’ most basic needs, and the summer is an even more difficult time for them,” said Les Cave, NAM’s President and CEO. “If everyone considers making a donation to NAM, no matter how big or small, that support will help ensure NAM will continue to deliver needed services to our community.”

Donations to support NAM can be made online at www.namonline.org/2019_sos or by sending a check to Northwest Assistance Ministries/Survival Over Summer, 15555 Kuykendahl Rd., Houston, TX 77090.

“We get good services at NAM,” said Velma, who has received food from NAM’s Joanne Watford Nutrition Center, visits the 60+ Café, and participates in Zumba classes at Fifty Plus. “They’ve got some very nice people, and they take care of everyone who needs the help,” she continued. “I think they’re the greatest. NAM is God-sent, that’s what it is.”
