MOW to add fresh produce to senior meal deliveries

NAM’s Food Assistance Programs aims to provide balanced nutrition and healthy options for our clients. At our food pantry, clients have always received fresh fruits and vegetables - and now NAM is looking to expand this to our Meals on Wheels seniors.

“Our seniors are used to receiving frozen meal boxes, especially during this pandemic, so the fresh fruits and vegetables have been extremely important to them.” said Grace Jackson, NAM’s Director of Senior Services.

The fresh produce is provided in partnership with the Common Market Texas, a regional nonprofit food distributor working to connect local farmers to local markets. The Common Market also supplies NAM’s Joanne Watford Nutrition Center with fresh produce for our food pantry clients.

The first time NAM Meals on Wheels delivered fresh produce to their seniors was July this year, with plans to deliver twice again during the month of October.

“Each one of our clients will get a box full of fresh organic produce. This is all free for our seniors and disabled adults,” said Grace.

With the rising cost of food prices, the fresh produce, provided by NAM’s Food Assistance Program, continues to be a critical need for our clients. “Fresh produce is something our seniors don’t get all the time. It's expensive, but it adds more nutritional value to their diets,” said Grace. “ And our seniors are homebound, but most times they are not going to the store themselves, so for us to be able to bring that box of produce is wonderful. Our seniors are very grateful and appreciative of the fresh produce that NAM can provide.”
