About NAM’s Disaster Relief Services
In August, 2017, Houston was hit with one of the worst storms in U.S. history. Over the course of five days, Hurricane Harvey dropped between 30 and 56 inches of rain in the Houston area, and the flooding that resulted was absolutely devastating.
After Hurricane Harvey, the Emergency Basic Needs program at NAM was on the front lines of providing emergency relief to neighbors impacted by the storm. NAM’s initial efforts focused on meeting core needs such as food, water and dry clothing. The newly completed Harrell Family Opportunity Center was a huge blessing to relief efforts, giving NAM the space to receive, sort, and distribute donations. By the end of the first week, NAM had served more than 6,000 neighbors in need.
The need for recovery assistance was so great that NAM established a department specifically for disaster relief, hiring a Director of Relief Programs and three disaster case managers. The community also reached out to NAM months later when they saw there was a need for behavioral healthcare. In response, NAM has added trained therapists to our Relief staff and has been working with organizations like Mental Health America of Greater Houston to help anyone suffering from the mental and emotional strain that a natural disaster can cause.
To date, NAM has raised over $5 million in relief funds and assisted more than 14,500 individuals impacted by Hurricane Harvey with food, clothing, hygiene products, rent and mortgage, utility bills, home repairs, furniture, appliances along with vehicle repairs and replacement.
If you, or someone you know, are still in need of disaster relief assistance please e-mail DisasterRelief@namonline.org or call (281) 885-4593 for more information.
*Applicants must reside in Harris County and a zip code in NAM’s service area. Zip codes 77338, 77339, 77375 and 77082 have also been added for those in need of disaster relief assistance.
If someone does not reside within those ZIP codes, NAM staff members refer the individual to the neighboring agency that serves the area where he or she resides.
NAM is the proud recipient of grant funding from a variety of businesses, foundations, the United Way and the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund (HHRF). The grants from the HHRF, established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and managed by the Greater Houston Community Foundation (GHCF), supply recipients with funds to be used to provide programs and/or services to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
