A Case Study: A five-year-old child was sent home from school with a high fever and swelling in the face. The family was without medical insurance and spoke no English. After a frustrating trip to the emergency room, they brought the boy in to The Children's Clinic at NAM. Through translators, the clinic staff reassured the child who was frightened and in a great deal of pain. The boy was found to have a dental abscess causing the fever and swelling. An immediate referral to a pedodontist participating in the Doctors' Outreach in Community Service (DOCS) network had the child scheduled the same day for immediate intervention.
NAM's Children's Clinic offers quality medical care to infants and children through age 18 for families who have Medicaid, Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or who are uninsured. The Clinic provides a full range of services, from preventative care to acute care.
Physicians, nurses, a medical assistant and a team of support staff and volunteers work together in the clinic. They take into account the child's overall health, nutrition and home environment to treat the whole family.
The Clinic continues to provide the Reach Out & Read Program, which includes a prescription to parents to read to their children 20 minutes a day. The Clinic also provides books to all patients through a donation program supported by the Rotary Club of Willowbrook, the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, individuals and businesses.
The Clinic serves as a training facility for the University of Texas Medical School - Houston, as well as health care training programs at other area community colleges and universities.
The Children’s Clinic is open five days a week and serves children 18 and under. Primary care, well child check-ups and immunizations are available. The Children’s Clinic does not accept patients with private health insurance. The clinic accepts Texas Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program. Fees for medical services are charged on a sliding scale based on family size and income.
Parents should call 281-885-4630 to make a well child appointment. The staff requests the first appointment be for a well child appointment so they can establish a baseline for the child and develop a relationship with the child and family before the child becomes sick.
If you do not have private or public insurance for medical care, you do have options to get benefits for your child. We can help you with your application to Texas Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Depending on your family's income, your child may qualify for one of these programs. Once you have coverage through Medicaid or CHIP, you should designate Dr. Heather Moore, our pediatrician, as your child's Primary Care Provider (PCP).

If your child is not covered by either of these programs because of income or other reasons and you live in Harris County, your child may qualify for the Harris County Hospital District's Gold Card. With a Gold Card, your child can still be treated in our Children's Clinic on a sliding fee scale. The Gold Card will be helpful for specialty care referrals and for purchasing prescriptions.

If the child has no coverage, the Children’s Clinic requires parents to bring in proof of income, expenses and proof of address so the staff can verify and establish a fee schedule. The fee will be anywhere from $7 to $125 for the first visit, depending on the family income and number of individuals in the household. The Clinic considers household income, not just individual income.
Parents must bring to the child’s first visit: child's birth certificate or birth facts, child's social security card, parent's social security card, parent's photo ID, child's immunization records, and, if the child is a newborn or was recently discharged from a hospital, parents should bring information from the hospital.
Parents of new patients should arrive 30 minutes before their appointment time so they can complete the necessary paperwork. The Children’s Clinic treats more than 700 patients each month, so it is important that you keep your child's scheduled appointments or notify the clinic if you cannot keep a scheduled appointment.
Once a patient is established in the Clinic, the staff will work closely with them to ensure patients are up-to-date on their annual well child examinations.
Each summer the clinic offers an immuinzation day to ensure area children receive their required school immunizations.
