"About 5 years ago my family decided I should come from New Orleans to Texas and live with them. When I arrived in Houston, my daughter said, 'You are going to NAM two or three times a week.' Naturally, I balked—I am not going among strangers! Well, they talked me into it, and I went.
"Now I look forward to every day I attend! I've made so many friends with people from all over the U.S. (and even some outside the U.S.). We talk, laugh and exchange our life stories. We have a marvelous time. We get to go on day trips to all kinds of fascinating places, and we get to exercise, play bingo, paint, craft, etc., etc., etc.
"NAM is our salvation—it saves our sanity—it keeps us from missing our 'old lives' and gives us a whole new outlook!"
NAM's Fifty Plus Senior Center offers a comprehensive array of services to seniors in the northwest Houston area. From an exciting calendar filled with social gatherings, creative activities, physical fitness, entertainment, and trips into the city and surrounding area, it is easy to see seniors at the NAM Fifty Plus Senior Center are anything but retiring! Retirees come to NAM with a wide range of expertise, including computer technologies, decorating, catering and party planning. NAM gives them an opportunity to continue to use that experience and talent in volunteer positions as diverse as their background experiences. Fifty Plus offers activities such as exercise, line and ballroom dance classes, day trips, monthly bus trips, bridge and other card games, puzzles, bingo craft groups. The Center serves an average of 325 seniors each month. Fifty Plus is a fun place for folks age 50 and older to socialize and keep physically fit and mentally active.
Opportunities to serve as goodwill ambassadors for NAM make the seniors one of NAM's most valuable assets. In the last fiscal year, Fifty Plus served seniors who made an average of 550 visits each month from more than 35 zip codes.
Senior Wheels is a National Organization that provides volunteer services to people age 50 and older or who are disabled and need transportation to medical appointments, grocery and drug stores, and shopping in Northwest Houston. All services are free of charge. Senior Wheels services 11 zip codes which include: 77014, 77066, 77067, 77068, 77069, 77070, 77086, 77090, 77379, 77388, 77389. Through the Fifty Plus program, 1,647 seniors participated 7,226 times in activities designed to enhance socialization, physical fitness, and mental capacities. In addition, through Senior Wheels and NAM transport, volunteers provided 1,167 rides to seniors.
