"Breakfast and an evening meal was about all my mother had the energy to muster up so "Meals on Wheels" brought her a hot lunch through the week for the past two years. She enjoyed the food but also looked forward to their arrival each day. We all thank you very much..."
NAM's Meals On Wheels (MOW) home-delivered meals program extends NAM's services to eligible seniors and individuals who are homebound because of illness or disability.
Providing hot, well-balanced meals and other nutritional services helps program participants maintain or improve their health, preserve and support independence and prevent premature or unnecessary institutionalization.
More than 500 volunteer drivers deliver thousands of hot, nutritious meals throughout the year. Qualifying individuals receive meals each weekday, and Saturday's frozen meals are delivered to those clients who are unable to be to receive their meals due to medical treatments or doctors appointments. Drivers also deliver groceries once a month to qualifying needy seniors through NAM's Senior Food program. Drivers provide a link to the outside world for many homebound clients. Many MOW clients have needs other than food so MOW Case Managers refer those clients with additional needs to the appropriate resources in the community.
Seniors sometimes find themselves parenting their children's children and these youngsters are eligible for basic school supplies through the Back-to-School Project and age-appropriate gifts through the Holiday Project. MOW is part of the Houston/Harris County Area Agency on Aging network of home nutrition providers and Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston.
In the last fiscal year, volunteer drivers delivered more than 132,000 meals to area seniors and disabled individuals, averaging 450 clients on weekdays and 90 on Saturdays.
