Assistance

Phone: 281-583-5600

(People seeking assistance must call 281-583-5600 and schedule an appointment for an interview. Families often need services from more than one NAM program. An interview is essential to determine a family's needs and which resources can best address their needs.)

The Assistance program is open weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

People often have a wide range of needs when they come to NAM for help. NAM's Assistance Program offers trained volunteer counseling to assess clients' needs and match them with services available within NAM and in Greater Houston.

The Assistance Program offers a variety of social services including food, prescriptions, gasoline vouchers, financial help with rent and utilities, school supplies and clothing, and holiday food and toys. A satellite office of Harris County Social Services is also located at NAM for the convenience of NAM's clients.

In the 2007-2008 fiscal year through the Assistance Program:

  • 32,256 people were helped with emergency assistance for basic needs, including: shelter, clothing, transportation, prescription medicines, and medical referrals.
  • The Back to School Project provided 2,758 children with school supplies and clothing, enabling the students to return to school ready to learn.
  • In November and December 2007, the Holiday Project provided 1,226 families with holiday dinners and groceries as well as toys and gifts for 3,583 children and teens.

"Home from a week of skiing, family time, Thanksgiving and celebration, now I am  back to the routine of counseling at NAM.

Most of my clients today came for food and toys for Christmas.  (I am thankful that I have always been able to feed my children and give my donations to NAM to help feed others.

One client came to NAM with a toothache.  (I am thankful that I can afford to routinely go to the dentist.)

A client came in who had lost her job just before the holidays and couldn't find another one.  (I am thankful that my husband has a secure job.)
A client with an epileptic daughter asked for referrals.  (I am thankful my children and grandchildren are healthy.)

A Spanish-speaking client needed protection.  (I have always felt safe.)

Working at NAM helps me remember to give thanks for my life and offers me the opportunity to help others better theirs."
