NAM’s 2009-2010 fiscal year began ominously as the need for our services was soaring and revenues were
in decline. We began the year with a decreased budget and an outstanding balance on our line of credit
of $300,000. The Executive Team had been challenged by the Board to cut expenses while maintaining
services and paying down the line of credit.
We are proud to say that NAM met the challenge. We served over 170,000 people this fiscal year – a
significant increase from last year. The greatest need has been for food and temporary financial assistance.
Our Children’s Clinic was also highly utilized, as parents found themselves unemployed and uninsured.
To make the best use of limited resources, NAM embarked on a number of collaborations with other
organizations. The Assistance Program enhanced its services through new efforts with the Houston Food
Bank. The Children’s Clinic partnered with Washington Mobile Dentistry to provide low cost dental services.
NAM’s Shelter and Energy Assistance (SEA) program worked with Sheltering Arms Senior Services to provide
over 1,000 families with energy assistance. SEA and Assistance partnered with the Cathedral Justice Project
to provide legal services.
Throughout the year, NAM continued to advocate for those we serve. Our Public Policy Strategy Committee
hosted its annual Legislative Breakfast in September. It was attended by Mayor Annise Parker, along with 13
local and state representatives. This event enables NAM to educate the community about local, state and
federal legislation that impacts us all.
Although last fiscal year was budgeted to break-even on a cash basis, we ended the year with a net surplus.
All contribution categories came in over budget. Resale sales continue to struggle and fell below budget
by about $100,000. Total expenses for the year were held at budgeted levels. Positive cash flow allowed
NAM to pay down its line of credit to $50,000. Once again, ninety cents of every dollar raised went to
direct services.
Individual giving increased by 18% and 449 new individuals became NAM donors. Corporate giving
increased by 42% and 43 new businesses became NAM donors. Congregational and foundation giving
also exceeded budget. The 2010 Jeans & Jewels luncheon and gala saw increased attendance and both
surpassed their fund raising goals. The NAM Endowment Fund also hosted a very successful dinner and
several new donor funds were established within the Endowment to ensure the future of NAM.
Besides funding, NAM also relies heavily on volunteers to carry out its mission. For the past several years,
volunteer hours have remained flat or even decreased year to year. Organizations around the country
experienced this trend. In 2009-2010, however, volunteer hours at NAM increased by 32%!
NAM also concluded a year-long process of streamlining and updating our governance model. NAM’s
original governing body consisted of representatives from its ten founding congregations who comprised
a Board of Trustees. As NAM grew, the Trustees created a new Executive Board to oversee operations.
The Executive Board eventually assumed all the responsibilities of a Board of Directors. The Board of
Trustees had grown to include representatives from over forty congregations, who acted as an advisory
body but still retained all the legal and fiduciary responsibilities granted them in NAM’s original bylaws. The
Board of Trustees, after months of research and discussion, decided to amend the bylaws to move that
fiduciary responsibility to the Executive Board. As of October 1, 2010, the Executive Board assumed that
responsibility and was re-named the Board of Trustees. The congregational representatives were re-named
the Congregational Advisory Council. Congregational members and pastors serve on the Board of Trustees,
to ensure a strong and close connection to the congregations..
It has been a very busy and fruitful year! Despite the difficulties, NAM is in a much better place today than
we were twelve months ago. We were honored for our efforts in 2010 by the Better Business Bureau with its
Pinnacle Award of Excellence – the highest honor bestowed by the BBB. With your help, we have had an
incredible year. And, with your help, NAM will be here for years to come!
